Monastrell

The Monastrell grape: indigenous variety

One of the most remarkable features that Monastrell shows nowadays is that it is especially concentrated in Murcia Region, as out of the 120,000 ha. around the world, most of these grapes are located in the Spanish Mediterranean regions, and among them, around 40% are grown just in Murcia, and Bullas has the privilege to grow almost 5,000 has. of this variety.

Monastrell is by far, the most widely grown red grape in Murcia. Monastrell is a native grape which has in the north-west of Murcia some clones of its own and different from the rest of the vinegrowing areas in the south-east of Spain.

The heritage of generations of vinegrowers offer, in these lands, wines of greater colour and alcoholic strength, finer and more elegant with an impressive aging capacity.

Monastrell has, in general, a long lifetime, and nowadays plots with more than fifty-year-old vineyards can be found. It is a very rustic variety highly resistant to drought, upright plants, with short and thick shoots with few branches.

Bunches are from low to medium size with blue-black berries and thick skin, rich in anthocyanins, a fleshy pulp and low tannins.

It is suitable to obtain rosé and red wines that show a marked varietal aroma and develop sensations of sweet, ripe fruit and low astringency.
